Main Page Holland Code I’m not answering any of these questions posed above — I’m asking them. And I’m pointing out that they have been asked (and answered) for decades. Many credible critics rule against chiropractic on all of these issues and several others. I had a great first experience and I look forward to coming back! Excited to see progress! -Amy F. Well let’s see. Considering first of all that chiropractic is philosophically distinct and separate from medicine and vice versa, calling chiropractic ‘medicine’ or using the term chiropractic medicine is is in itself not only an oxymoron but a huge contradiction as well. In addition, considering that there is no chiropractic education in the medical school curriculum, few if any MD’s will have any knowledge of what chiropractic is (Go ahead and ask any MD what they know about chiropractic and you’re answer will be 99% of the time, unknown, incorrect or at the very least, diluted.) So if they have no knowledge of chiropractic, how would they research it? You guessed it. They don’t. So as a result you are not going to find any chiropractic research articles, let alone one using the term subluxation in any ‘gold standard’ medical literature. Medical journals report research on drugs and surgery only. Subluxation has always been a chiropractic term. In any medical text book, it refers to an “incomplete or partial dislocation of a joint or organ”. If you want chiropractic research, you are only going to get it from someone with a DC &/or PhD degree because that is what they study. Make sense??? For the same reason you won’t find any DC’s doing research on drugs and surgery. You have to look at what Deed Harrision, DC (& his late father Don Harrison, DC, PhD.) have done which will certainly stand up to scientific scrutiny. Here’s a link to get you started … https://idealspine.com/cbp-research/. Let’s be clear, your idea of what a chiro does is clearly disillusional. Chiropractors do head to toe treatment (some may chose to specialise in one area though, like someone in any other profession might do) we are not pure spine specialists. And we do not like to treat symptoms, the goal is to treat the cause and alleviate symptoms, just like any other health care profession would do. Google it or go visit an educational institution for chiropractic if you don’t believe me. But, lack of consent, clear misinformation, or harm is not good if caused by poor history taking, lack of education or information. Be my guest an report them to the GCC etc. But considering the number of treatments Chiropractors Perform yearly, it is actually a very safe profession, by looking at the data. Paracetamol kills more people or medical doctors by misdiagnosis or medical prescriptions. I am not against medications or doctors, but you can’t keep going around the world with a selective tunnel vision. Prof. Ernst will always try to ruin the profession regardless how much info or research you provide, but he also believes chiropractic is a treatment (I.e manipulations) and not a profession as it is viewed by most chiropractors. Which the means that osteopathy or a M.d, physio etc. who adjusts are just as bad and cause just as much harm. I use mobilisation, band stretches, massage, trigger point therapy, cbt, dry needling, graston, rehab etc etc. I did not attend a 5 year education and get a bachelor in human sciences to purely adjust people. It is a combination of approaches tailored for the individual right in front of you that makes the team and a good result. Please see talk to more than 1 chiro or more than 1 group of chiros that are evidence based to see that there as as much diversity within this profession as any else. 1 bad nurse does not make every nurse bad, and all swans are not white 😉 do some research. In Denmark, Norway and Switzerland to mention some, chiropractors work alongside doctors at hospitals, write sick leaves, refer to specialists, work in rehab and work in multidisciplinary care. We see people before surgery to evaluate if treatment can be tried first, we reduce costs for the health care system and shorten down the time our patients are away from work. We are accepted, maybe not so much in the UK and US, but they also have lower requirements and less regulation within the profession. Aging & Longevity Email:  Health & Wellness Chiropractic is a nonsurgical, drugless form of healthcare that seeks to enhance health and manage back and neck pain. Using noninvasive, manual manipulation techniques, chiropractic care often serves as a great entry point for the evaluation and treatment for many conditions related to the spine, such as disc injuries, overuse injuries and joint dysfunction, among many other conditions. It may be used independently or in conjunction with other treatments. All other homeopathic products are unlicensed medicines and should not be advertised, sold or supplied (essentially) except by someone with independent prescribing rights (essentially medical doctors). Sadly, all to many pharmacies advertise the sugar pills: many won’t believe in them of course and some need the profit, but I’m sure it would help if they distanced themselves from all quackery. Hands-on therapy—especially adjustment of the spine—is central to chiropractic care. Chiropractic is based on the notion that the relationship between the body’s structure (primarily that of the spine) and its function (as coordinated by the nervous system) affects health. Macquarie University Scholarships In referring to your webpage, specifically the portion referring to the lady who died as the result of a chiropractic adjustment, I will say that is a tragedy. But, I will bet all the money I have, that the number of patients who have died under the knife, from misdiagnosis, or from adverse reaction to drugs prescribed by MD's outnumbers the patients who have died as the result of chiropractic care 100:1. What about the patient in the news earlier this year who had the wrong leg amputated? OOPS!!!!!!!! What has your profession done to combat cancer Mr. Barrett? Chemotherapy is not working. Radiation is a last ditch effort at best. What about the hole your profession has dug concerning the antibiotic overprescription. That alone poses major health concerns from infections in the 21st century. Super resistant strains of Staph and Strept alone could have major affects on the population. The era of the good old family doctor being the expert on health is over. Plain and simple. You are one of the dinosaurs that will soon be extinct. I think the sooner your profession takes a less negative inspection of chiropractic and can see the positives of chiropractic care then the health care arena will benefit. Let's face the real isue. The chiropractic and medical professions have similar goals. MD's are disease care doctors. Chiropractors are health care doctors. You treat disease. We aim to clear the cause of disharmonies in the body's operating machinery that we deem negative to the efficient operation of the body. The medical profession seeks to alter the body's chemistry to correct an affect of some cause. In the majority of cases that I have been exposed to MD's only treat symptoms. Do you think that the body regulates itself and is self sufficient? If you do, then do you believe that instances exist where that ability or abilities might become compromised? As a chiropractor I strive to locate those entities and aid the body in ridding itself of those negative disharmonies in order to facillitate the body doing its thing in a better way. Adapt or die. If you can't adapt to all the environmental forces you come into contact with sooner or later your system will be overwhelmed. In closing I will say that I am not anti-medicine. But I am pro-chiropractic and as a patient I feel like I have had a better quality of life with chiropractic care. We see things different yes. But, don't knock something until you have tried it. . . . I thank you for your time and attention. Merry Christmas and have your spine checked. Stress urinary incontinence is a common disease among older people, especially women. The symptoms are leakage of urine when the person coughs, laughs or exercises. It affects social, psychological, physical and financial aspects of life. Acupuncture is used widely in Asian countries for this condition and frequency of use is increasing worldwide. From the viewpoint of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture could improve the symptoms of stress urinary incontinence by reinforcing qi (the vital substance constituting human body) and promoting recovery of the bladder's function. This review included only one small trial with 60 women. There was not enough evidence to assess the effects of acupuncture for stress urinary incontinence compared with drug treatment, and high-quality randomised controlled trials are needed. Andy, opinion can be just as useless as an anecdote, and you are full of opinion but no fact, much like the self professed Edzard Ernst who for the past 20 years has twisted scientific research to promote his own agenda. And if you don’t think he has an agenda just go research his past. There are many studies, funded and performed by non-chiropractors, that support Chiropractic as a beneficial treatment. One such report is called the Manga Report, commissioned by the Ministry of Health of Ontario 25 years ago. It was a review of all the literature up to that point in time. It was actually commissioned after repeated requests by the medical profession so they could “shut our profession down”. What a surprise it must have been to them when the results were the opposite of what they expected. Of course they attacked the University and Dr Manga himself (up to that point in time the poster child for top notch efficacy studies in Canada). As for teaching sales techniques in the colleges, I am afraid I must have skipped out on that class, and I don’t seem to find it on any course outline from any chiro college. There are bad apples in every profession, Dentists, MD’s, lawyers, and I’ve been subject to nonsense sales techniques, lying, and pressure tactics from them all. That is the nature of earning a living for rendering services, there is always some business owner who is having a hard time making ends meet and will push the limits of what is considered morally correct. Look at how the banks push tellers to up-sell poor old ladies! Disgusting! I have taken people from the brink of giving up on life, from looking for a nursing home due to their poor health, from being told they need a hip replacement or discectomy, to having to suffer none of that, to crying in my office with gratitude that they are able to function as they could ten years earlier, and taking up activities that they gave up on. These people were not given ANY other option and weren’t listened to up till the time I saw them. But you cannot take a person with 20 years of bad physical habits and damage to their bodies and fix that in 12 sessions, it can take months and sometimes a few years to work that all out, just like physical rehabilitation can after a severe injury. But I don’t hear anyone saying that’s not appropriate?! Because it is appropriate, for the right patient. White-washing a group of people such as chiropractors with the same brush is the same as saying all Americans are ignorant, or all lawyers are crooks, sure there are a measurable portion who are, but you would be considered ignorant for saying it, as it is in this case. Edzard has already written enough nonsense to prove that he doesn’t represent the research accurately or truthfully. Its unfortunate that the newspapers don’t call him out for it when our regulatory body (the people that take our licences away) correct his articles, and it often happens that the retraction is on page 6 or there is none at all. Those don’t sell papers. And FYI, I have had approximately 3000 referrals from ortho/neuro specialists over many years that only continued to refer due to the overwhelming positive feedback from my results. These people were sent to the specialists as a last resort by their GP because they didn’t know what to do next. Over that same period in time I barely received 10 from the local GP’s, solely due to the misperception propogated by guys like Edzard that they could face legal backlash. You’d be surprised how misinformed many GP’s are about many things, and how they rely on here-say and self professed “experts” like Ernst. Speaking to sales tactics, a GP friend of mine was enticed to attend a conference many years ago (20) at York University in Toronto where Ernst and a couple of other “experts” advertised a conference on how to integrate complimentary healthcare into their practice. Five minutes into the “conference” it was clear that this was not the intention at all and my friend returned fuming from that conference. The whole thing was orchestrated to entice open minded GP’s to attend and then brain wash them into fear of any and ALL complimentary healthcare. THAT is the truth of Edzard “the expert” Ernst. He’s an expert all right, but its not on what you think. You guys are AMAZING and I can’t thank you enough for how you’ve helped my son! A prolific reader of all things scientific, DD Palmer realized that although various forms of manipulation had been used for hundreds if not thousands of years, no one had developed a philosophical or scientific rationale to explain their effects. Palmer’s major contribution to the health field was therefore the codification of the philosophy, art and science of chiropractic which was based on his extensive study of anatomy and physiology.  Memberships Free Stuff for AlumniShow sub menu The Chiropractic Stroke Awareness group and Neck911.com are both devoted to raising awareness about the risk of stroke and death from manipulation of the cervical spine, and offer resources for people who believe they have been injured by neck manipulation. You need a science degree with chiropractic ‘top up’. None of the science topics have anything to do with the hands on treatment units. I just went to the resources section and spine-health is listed. On spine-health it says ‘do not use high velocity manipulation (and adjustment) on cervical spine’ when treating disc problems, ‘should be avoided as they can make pain worst and contribute to neurological damage.’ then in the same section the video ‘manipulations for cervical spine’ the instructor demonstrates a high velocity manipulation on a cervical spine! Scary stuff. My friend went to a chiropractor for a sore neck and had a manipulation of that kind and passed out. That means her main artery was twisted and compressed. This can lead to stroke. She still has lasting damage from that it was years ago. And these people are accredited and have a five year university degree in Australia. Mind your the actual hands-on units are only about four out of the entire degree. I would personally stay away from all manipulations, there is nothing that gentle stretching couldn’t fix, and as someone commented, they won’t fix the muscle structure or underlying disease process. And an x-ray cannot show you anything about nerves, so anyone having their treatments based on an Xray rather than an MRI is not getting the full picture of their spinal health. Just because your doctor might not help you doesn’t automatically mean that a chiropractor is better. stretching can achieve the same thing if ‘opening up a joint’ is required.
