Duties Dr. Arturo Presas ClinicalTrials.gov: Chiropractic Therapy (National Institutes of Health) Sci, while your criticism of Danielle’s post is correct — that she cites anecdotal and not empirical evidence — it’s notable that you and your science degree have conspicuously not held the author of this article to the same standard. Just the same, like all studies, there IS counter-evidence to consider. And denying it exists — without even looking to see if it does — will not change that. Email:  Maps In 2005, the chiropractic subluxation was defined by the World Health Organization as "a lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact.[45] It is essentially a functional entity, which may influence biomechanical and neural integrity."[45] This differs from the medical definition of subluxation as a significant structural displacement, which can be seen with static imaging techniques such as X-rays.[45] This exposes patients to harmful ionizing radiation for no evidentially supported reason.[46][47] The 2008 book Trick or Treatment states "X-rays can reveal neither the subluxations nor the innate intelligence associated with chiropractic philosophy, because they do not exist."[6] Attorney David Chapman-Smith, Secretary-General of the World Federation of Chiropractic, has stated that "Medical critics have asked how there can be a subluxation if it cannot be seen on X-ray. The answer is that the chiropractic subluxation is essentially a functional entity, not structural, and is therefore no more visible on static X-ray than a limp or headache or any other functional problem."[48] The General Chiropractic Council, the statutory regulatory body for chiropractors in the United Kingdom, states that the chiropractic vertebral subluxation complex "is not supported by any clinical research evidence that would allow claims to be made that it is the cause of disease."[49] Watch the video profile about chiropractors (in the Health Sciences category). What’s the best way to choose a chiropractor in Hamilton, Rototuna and Morrinsville? You’re doing it! Spend some time here exploring our chiropractic philosophy and our patient-centric procedures. I’m no fan of pseudoscience. I worked for chiropractors so I know how they spew unproven and disproven buncombe. But I also saw first hand how people with severe spinal related pain were helped when no one else could. Even so I refused to see any chiros because I was disgusted by the industry. Until… after having seen 2 orthopedists, 3 physical therapists, and having an epidural block in my neck a respected orthopedic surgeon suggested I see a certain chiropractor for the neck pain and daily headaches which often turned into full blown migraines. I had cervicogenic headaches. And as anyone with migraines knows, any headache can trigger a migraine. So I had migraines almost daily. Medications helped but not enough so I was desperate. As much as I distrust chiropractors I had no other options before me since I was not a candidate for surgery. The adjustments helped very much. And this chiro was definitely different than any I had seen. He made no claims that he could treat anything besides spinal pain. And he didn’t try to get me to come in more than I wanted or continuously. But here is my problem: it only seems to help as long as I am going. I get a few adjustments and then after awhile I find I must go back again. And I am not confident that there are long term effects of regular spinal manipulations. But then again I’m not convinced there are long term effects from some of the medications I must take either. Medications I would have to take much more often without the chiropractor. When I succeed with someone in doing that – in helping them change the patterns of a lifetime – it's a very satisfying feeling." Clinical decision making is all about presenting the best choices to patients. High-quality, patient-oriented evidence serves as the foundation of this important process. However, there are many areas within the discipline of rehabilitation where our knowledge and practices are suboptimal. It will be the role of research to fill these gaps in knowledge and inform our future practices. Nephrology Soledad Partner with us laser Drug-Free Pain Relief I have just been exploring the university courses for chiropractic medicine if you can call it that. You need a science degree with chiropractic ‘top up’. None of the science topics have anything to do with the hands on treatment units. I just went to the resources section and spine-health is listed. On spine-health it says ‘do not use high velocity manipulation (and adjustment) on cervical spine’ when treating disc problems, ‘should be avoided as they can make pain worst and contribute to neurological damage.’ then in the same section the video ‘manipulations for cervical spine’ the instructor demonstrates a high velocity manipulation on a cervical spine! Scary stuff. My friend went to a chiropractor for a sore neck and had a manipulation of that kind and passed out. That means her main artery was twisted and compressed. This can lead to stroke. She still has lasting damage from that it was years ago. And these people are accredited and have a five year university degree in Australia. Mind your the actual hands-on units are only about four out of the entire degree. I would personally stay away from all manipulations, there is nothing that gentle stretching couldn’t fix, and as someone commented, they won’t fix the muscle structure or underlying disease process. And an x-ray cannot show you anything about nerves, so anyone having their treatments based on an Xray rather than an MRI is not getting the full picture of their spinal health. Just because your doctor might not help you doesn’t automatically mean that a chiropractor is better. stretching can achieve the same thing if ‘opening up a joint’ is required. Subjects Career Profiles and Employment Projections Whatever the fate of the profession, you’d probably like to know what kind of a chiropractor is treating you today, a “straight” or a “mixer,” regardless of which you’d prefer. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible for patients to tell which is which! And that is a serious problem for all chiropractors. Read more news -Christina J.
